Kimi Raikkonen is Someone to Reckon with in Turkey
Kimi Raikkonen's last-gasp lap put last year's winner on top when practice for the Turkish Grand Prix got underway in Istanbul this morning.
Kimi Raikkonen left it late to clock a lap of 1:28.315 in his McLaren, keeping Ferrari's Michael Schumacher off top spot by 0.462secs.
Fresh from his first grand prix win, in Hungary three weeks ago, Jenson Button was again mixing it with the front-runners today, taking third place in his Honda.
Unusually, Formula One's test drivers were not the pacesetters in first practice, with Williams' Alex Wurz their leading representative in fourth.
He was closely followed by Honda counterpart Anthony Davidson. But the Englishman's morning did not go smoothly and his session came to an end 10 minutes early when his Honda engine blew up.
Pedro de la Rosa completed the top six for McLaren while Red Bull's David Coulthard was among 10 drivers, including world championship leader Fernando Alonso, not to set a lap time.
Sebastien Vettel made his Formula One debut as BMW-Sauber reshuffle in the wake of Jacques Villeneuve's departure.
With Robert Kubica stepping up to fill Villeneuve's race seat, 19-year-old rising star Vettel was given his chance as Friday tester.
He quickly settled into life as a Formula One driver and ensured a top-10 spot with eighth after his first 25 laps of a grand prix weekend.
